Quickfire Tips! Japan #1 – Tattoos

Here’s how your body art might be misconstrued.

Tattoos are a work of art for some people. I’m a blank canvas myself but I have it on good authority that getting inked can become quite the addiction.

Take note that there’s a stigma around tattoos in Japan which may not be common knowledge to the Western world. The yakuza (gangsters) traditionally marked their bodies with tattoos.

Okay, so you may not be immediately associated with organised crime but advice online suggests that it’s worth making the effort to cover your tattoos. Particularly if you go swimming or visit an Onsen (Japanese baths). Some Onsen’s ban tattoos altogether so keep this in mind.
